High Frequency Magnetics for DC/DC Converters in BESS

Market Trends

Redox flow batteries are becoming a strong alternative for large-scale energy storage. They allow to independently scale energy and power capacity, while offering long operational life and high cycle stability with minimal degradation.

Connection is made by bidirectional DC/DC converters used to manage the controlled charge and discharge through the DC bus. These converters require specific magnetic components to ensure efficient, reliable, and long-lasting operation.

Typical Requirements

  • Power Requirements: 5kW to 20kW.
  • Input Voltage Range (from inverters): 600V DC to 1000V DC.
  • Output Voltage Range (to stacks): 40V DC to 120V DC.
  • Peak Currents: Up to 3000A.
  • Switching frequency: 80kHz to 200kHz.
  • Common topologies: Dual Active Bridge (DAB)
  • Tigh inductance tolerances.
  • Good thermal management.

PRAX approach: Transformer with integrated resonant inductor

  • Tighter inductance tolerance: Less than 10%.
  • Reduction of fringing effect.
  • Good disipation.
  • Shielded magnetic stray fields from leakage inductance.
  • Working Voltage: Up to 1500V.
  • Hi-pot isolation: Up to 5000Vac.
